Some Nigerians say they are ready to vote in the 2027 General Election, while others doubt that the process will bring real change.
This is according to a street poll conducted by Nigeria Info in the wake of the defections, screenings, and declarations by various aspirants ahead of the vote.
Several respondents said hardship under the Bola Tinubu administration is pushing them to participate in the election.
One voter said people were “crying and wailing” because of the country’s condition and added that she wanted “a new Nigeria” with better healthcare, infrastructure, and leadership.
Support for former Labour Party presidential candidate and current Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) aspirant, Peter Obi, featured strongly in the poll.
Some respondents said they would only vote if Obi joins forces with other opposition figures and contests on a political platform stronger than the NDC.
"I will participate on one condition," one person said.
"If they give Obi the ticket, Obi and Kwankwaso, if they can give them the ticket at ADC, yes, ADC, ADC," he clarified.
"I don't think NDC can overpower APC."
Others, however, expressed deep distrust in Nigeria’s electoral system.
One respondent claimed election results in the country are already decided before voting begins, while another said, “There is no election in Nigeria. They are just doing appointments.”
Despite the doubts, some interviewees encouraged Nigerians, especially young people, to come out and vote.
One respondent described voting as a “civil responsibility” and said citizens must elect leaders who can move the country forward.
Another voter blamed low turnout for weakening democracy, arguing that large numbers of voters at polling units could make it harder for elections to be manipulated.
The poll also showed mixed reactions to recent political defections, with some respondents calling them necessary and others describing politicians who switch parties frequently as selfish and unserious.
