One person was killed and three others were seriously injured in a crash along the Lagos Coastal Road toward Eko Hotel in the early hours of Thursday.

The accident involved a grey vehicle, according to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA.

LASTMA officials monitoring traffic around the Coastal Road axis quickly moved to the scene, secured the affected section and helped coordinate the emergency response.

Preliminary findings by LASTMA showed that the vehicle reportedly lost control, hit a roadside pole and overturned.

The three injured victims were rescued from the wreckage with help from passersby and taken to a hospital within a Military Zone for urgent medical treatment.

Security personnel from Victoria Island also assisted at the scene, while LASTMA removed the damaged vehicle to prevent another crash and restore traffic flow.

Emergency and security agencies were also involved in rescue, investigation and safety operations.

LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and warned motorists against excessive speeding and reckless driving.

Bakare-Oki cautioned that speeding, reckless driving and loss of vehicle control could have “devastating and irreversible consequences” for motorists and other road users.

He urged drivers to remain vigilant, maintain safe speeds and obey traffic regulations.

The LASTMA boss also asked members of the public to report crashes, vehicle breakdowns, road obstructions and other emergencies through the agency’s toll-free short code, 3367.

The crash comes amid renewed concerns about safety on the Lagos section of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.

In September, the Federal Government warned that it could close the Lagos section of the highway if speeding, vandalism, illegal parking and other safety violations continued.

Federal Controller of Works in Lagos Olufemi Dare said some motorists were driving at speeds averaging 120 km/h despite ongoing work and a 30 km/h speed limit on the route.
