Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, have stepped up their campaign message ahead of the 2027 presidential election, warning that political power alone will not guarantee victory.
The duo spoke Thursday at an NDC town hall meeting in Port Harcourt, Rivers state, where they engaged voters and criticised what they described as problems with Nigeria’s political system and governance.
Obi warned against electoral malpractice and said Nigerians would demand that their votes be counted.
“Our votes this time must count, and whoever doesn’t count it, we will count the person,” he said.
The former Anambra governor also urged politicians seeking office to speak directly with voters.
“We’ve had enough of this nonsense,” Obi said.
“Leadership cannot be outsourced.
"If you want to lead, you have to talk to the people.”
Kwankwaso, a former Kano governor, warned political parties against assuming that control of more than 30 states would guarantee victory at the presidential poll.
“The sitting president lost the election,” he said.
“Especially those who think because they have over 30 governors, they cannot lose the election.
"That is a very big mistake.”
Kwankwaso also criticised some northern governors, claiming their poor performance could make it difficult for them to campaign effectively.
“The trend is those governors and their party have performed woefully to the extent that it is very difficult for them even to come out and campaign,” he said.
The comments come as Obi and Kwankwaso intensify their grassroots mobilisation as part of the NDC’s preparations for the 2027 election.
