Peter Obi Challenges Tinubu to Account for ₦15.8 Trillion Subsidy Savings, Borrowings

Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has challenged President Bola Tinubu to account for the resources generated through fuel subsidy removal, government borrowings and increased revenue, saying Nigerians deserve to know how the money has improved their lives.

In an open letter titled *“Good Day, Mr President: Nigerians Deserve Accountability,”* Obi urged Tinubu to use his visit to Akwa Ibom State as an opportunity to explain how his administration has managed the country’s resources.

Obi congratulated the president on spending a night in a state outside Lagos and Abuja and expressed hope that the visit would encourage him to travel to other parts of the country and engage with Nigerians.

He asked the president to explain how the government had utilised the ₦15.8 trillion reportedly saved from fuel subsidy removal, more than $100 billion in borrowings and additional revenue generated through taxation.

Obi also referred to government revenue that the administration had previously said exceeded its target, asking how the increased resources had translated into measurable improvements in citizens’ welfare.

The former governor said Nigerians deserved figures showing how many people had been lifted out of poverty, how many out-of-school children had returned to classrooms and how many functional primary health care centres had been built.

He also questioned the administration’s record on electricity supply, recalling Tinubu’s promise that Nigerians should not vote for him if he failed to fix the power sector.

On security, Obi said the government owed citizens an explanation of its efforts to secure the country, which he described as still ranking among the most terrorised countries in the world.

“Nigerians deserve answers. They deserve to know what has been done with the resources entrusted to your government,” Obi said.

He said the Nigeria he hoped to see would be built on accountability, transparency and the measurable impact of public resources on citizens.

Obi ended the letter with his familiar message that a new Nigeria was possible.

The statement comes amid growing political debate over the management of fuel subsidy savings, government borrowing and the impact of economic reforms ahead of the 2027 general election.
