The Nigeria Police Force has suspended the planned nationwide enforcement of its tinted glass permit policy following an interim court order.

The force had earlier announced that enforcement would resume from 2nd January 2026.

However, police said they were served with an interim order in Suit No. HOR FHR M 31 2025, issued on 17th December 2025.

The order restrains the police from proceeding with enforcement pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit or the vacation of the order.

In a statement, the police said the decision to halt enforcement was taken in line with constitutional obligations and respect for judicial authority.

The force added that it has entered appearance in court, raised preliminary objections, and applied for the interim order to be vacated.

“Accordingly, and strictly in compliance with the subsisting court order, the Nigeria Police Force has placed the enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy on hold nationwide,” the statement said.

The tinted glass permit policy was first introduced in 2025 and revived in December.

It requires owners of vehicles with darkened windows to obtain annual permits through an online platform.

The policy drew strong opposition from the Nigerian Bar Association.

NBA President Afam Osigwe described it as unconstitutional, illegal, and extortionate.

He said a police notice issued on December 15 showed what he called a troubling disregard for the rule of law.

The police confirmed that the case has been fixed for further hearing on 20th January 2026.

Until then, motorists will not be subjected to enforcement.
