American rapper Rick Ross has been arrested in Miami Beach, Florida, over allegations that he assaulted and choked a woman during a domestic dispute.
Ross, whose real name is William Leonard Roberts II, voluntarily surrendered to Miami Beach police early Thursday and was booked at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center at 6:10 a.m., according to police and court records.
The 50-year-old rapper faces one felony charge of battery by strangulation and one misdemeanor battery charge, both classified as domestic violence-related.
According to an arrest affidavit, the alleged incident happened on the 28th of August at Ross’ home on Star Island.
The woman told police that Ross became angry after seeing that she had been tagged in an Instagram photo.
She alleged that Ross slapped her, struck her chest several times and grabbed and twisted the collar of her hoodie, restricting her breathing.
The woman also told investigators that Ross grabbed her ponytail and slammed her against a wall before hitting her in the face, causing a split lip.
Police said she provided timestamped photographs of her injuries.
The allegations came days after model and influencer Jazzma Kendrick accused Ross of physical abuse on social media. Kendrick said she had been treated as a “punching bag” and posted a photo of an injured lip.
Ross has denied the allegations.
His attorney, Bradley Horenstein, said his client is “totally innocent” and urged the public not to prejudge the case.
Ross pleaded not guilty and was released on bond.
His arraignment is scheduled for 22nd October.
