Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu says his administration has delivered 10,623 housing units across 23 estates since 2019, as the state seeks to address its housing shortage.
The governor disclosed this in a statement issued by the Ministry of Housing on Friday after the seventh Real Estate Discussions and Awards held in Lagos.
His keynote address was delivered by the Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, at the event on Tuesday.
Sanwo-Olu said 4,414 homes were delivered through direct government funding, while 6,209 came through public-private partnerships.
He added that ongoing housing schemes and joint venture projects could increase the total number of homes delivered or projected for completion to 14,022.
“Government cannot close a deficit of this size alone, and it does not intend to,” he said, calling for stronger cooperation among government agencies, developers and financial institutions.
The governor also said mortgage and rent-to-own schemes run by the Lagos State Mortgage Board had supported more than 20,000 residents over the past 12 years.
He added that 944 civil servants had benefited from a 40% housing rebate designed to make homeownership more affordable.
Sanwo-Olu said housing development generated 4,793 direct and indirect jobs in the previous year, while supporting construction businesses and other economic activities.
On consumer protection, he disclosed that the Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority had recovered more than ₦270 million from fraudulent estate agents.
He also said the state government was working with the Lagos State House of Assembly on a new tenancy law to address excessive rent increases and illegal charges.
The governor urged stakeholders to support efforts to expand housing supply, improve access to finance and ensure new estates have adequate roads, drainage, water and transport facilities.
Lagos faces a housing deficit estimated at more than 3.3 million units, according to previous statements by state housing officials.
The government has projected that ongoing projects will raise housing delivery to 14,022 units.
