The Sokoto State High Court has sentenced Ibrahim Usman, also known as Dan Iyali, to death for his involvement in the kidnapping and killing of three people in Sokoto State in September 2023.
The conviction followed a prosecution by the Department of State Services (DSS), which brought four charges against Usman, including criminal conspiracy, kidnapping, culpable homicide and causing serious bodily harm.
Justice Mohammed Mohammed ruled that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.
He sentenced Usman to life imprisonment for kidnapping and death by hanging for culpable homicide.
According to the prosecution, Usman and his accomplices attacked Bare village in Goronyo Local Government Area on 9th September, 2023, kidnapping several residents.
The victims were taken to Marmaro Forest in Giayawa District, where three of them were killed.
Two other victims, Ahmad Alhassan and Abdulmalik Muazu, sustained serious injuries before being abandoned in the forest. Members of a local vigilante group later rescued them.
Security sources said Usman was arrested in Bare village in May 2024 and subsequently charged under the Sokoto State Penal Code Law of 2019.
His accomplices remain at large.
A security source told the media that the conviction formed part of the DSS's wider efforts to tackle violent crime.
The source said the agency remained committed to investigating and prosecuting suspects involved in kidnapping, terrorism-related violence and other serious security offenses nationwide.
