President Bola Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, and appointed Assistant Inspector-General Tunji Disu as the new acting head of the Nigeria Police Force.

Egbetokun stepped down from his position on Tuesday, 24th February 2026, after meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday.

Government sources said the president asked him to resign and begin the handover process to his successor, but official statements state that Egbetokun resigned due to pressing family issues.

Tunji Disu is now expected to become the next Inspector-General of Police once the official confirmation process is completed.

He will serve in an acting capacity for now.

Disu is a senior police officer with many years of experience.

Before this appointment, he worked in the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Lagos and held important roles such as leading the Rapid Response Squad and the Intelligence Response Team.

Egbetokun was first appointed IGP in June 2023, and his leadership continued after the National Assembly changed the law to allow a four-year term for police chiefs.

He was expected to serve until 2027, but his resignation ended his tenure early.

The change in leadership comes as the country continues to face challenges such as kidnappings, banditry and public calls for better policing.

Authorities have not yet released a full official statement, and details of a formal handover ceremony are still being worked out.
