Tributes have poured in from Nigerian leaders and traditional rulers as former president Olusegun Obasanjo marked his 89th birthday.

Among those who celebrated the elder statesman is President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who praised Obasanjo’s long service to the country and his continued influence in national affairs.

In a statement released by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described the former leader as a key figure in Nigeria’s history.

He said Obasanjo’s “towering influence in the country, Africa, and beyond is significant.”

The president also recalled Obasanjo’s role as Nigeria’s military head of state from 1976 to 1979, when he handed over power to a civilian government, and later as the country’s first elected president in the Fourth Republic from 1999 to 2007.

Tinubu noted that the former leader showed courage and sacrifice during his years of service, including defending Nigeria’s unity and speaking out against military rule.

“As Chief Obasanjo turns 89, we acknowledge the zeal and wisdom he has brought to Nigeria’s development through his books and interventions,” the president said, while praying for “good health, strength and wisdom.”

Obasanjo’s Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, also congratulated him, praising his lifelong service and dedication to Nigeria.

In a message posted on X, Atiku described Obasanjo’s life as “defined by service, courage, and an enduring commitment to Nigeria.”

He highlighted the former president’s contributions to national unity and development, calling his journey “remarkable” and his impact “truly significant.”

Former President Goodluck Jonathan also congratulated Obasanjo, describing his life as “a profound narrative of patriotism, courage and commitment to the peace and progress of Nigeria.”

Traditional leaders also joined the celebrations, including Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, who commended the former president for his leadership and contributions to national unity.

Born in 1937, Obasanjo remains one of Nigeria’s most influential political figures and continues to speak on governance, democracy and development across Africa.
