Trump Posts Data on Nigerian Immigrants, Welfare Use

U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday posted a chart on Truth Social showing the share of immigrant households from about 120 countries that receive some form of U.S. public assistance, touching off a debate over immigration and welfare.

The table lists nations with the highest rates of household-level assistance. Bhutan tops the list at 81.4%, Yemen 75.2% and Somalia 71.9%.

The chart shows about 33.3% of Nigerian immigrant households receiving some assistance.

India was notably absent from the list.

Trump posted the data as he continues to press his party’s immigration and welfare messages.

The move followed a string of comments from the president about certain immigrant groups — including repeated attacks on Somali communities — and came as the White House weighs tighter migration and benefit rules.

Experts and fact-checkers cautioned that charts like this can be misleading without clear sourcing and context.

The American Community Survey and other household surveys record self-reported benefit use, but that does not directly show whether individuals were eligible for or received federal benefits administered by different agencies.

“Without context, this graphic is misleading,” an expert told Al Jazeera in a related analysis of similar charts.

The Truth Social post did not include a clear citation for the underlying data.
