U.S. President Donald Trump has called for Ukraine to get a new president, accusing Volodymyr Zelenskyy of failing to reach a peace agreement with Russia.
“I think it’s time for Ukraine to get a new president,” Trump told reporters on Saturday.
“I suggest they get a new leader who can make a deal because he could have made many deals and, for some reason, he never does,” he added.
Trump also blamed Ukraine’s attacks on Russian oil refineries for contributing to rising diesel prices, saying the strikes were creating problems for American farmers and ranchers.
“He wants to make problems for the world.
"He wants to make problems for our farmers, our ranchers, with diesel fuel,” Trump said.
The comments came amid growing tensions between Washington and Kyiv over a new diesel supply agreement between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump announced on Friday that Russia would supply hundreds of thousands of tons of diesel to the United States, with further deliveries planned.
The U.S. Treasury Department also temporarily eased sanctions on Russian energy supplies.
Zelenskyy criticised the agreement, warning that Russia could use the additional revenue to finance its war against Ukraine.
“It plays into Russia’s hands,” he said, arguing that the deal would allow Moscow to continue its military campaign.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha defended Zelenskyy, saying the Ukrainian people had the right to choose their leader.
“He has the support of the Ukrainian people, and they have the right to decide,” Sybiha said.
Trump has repeatedly pushed for an end to the war, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Zelenskyy said Sunday that Ukraine would organise elections if Russia agreed to a 60-day ceasefire, according to Reuters.
