Heavy violence broke out in parts of Mexico after the country’s army killed Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, the head of one of the nation’s most powerful drug gangs.

El Mencho, 59, led the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), which was known for moving illegal drugs like fentanyl, methamphetamine and cocaine.

The cartel also carried out violent attacks against people and government forces for many years.

The army said El Mencho was wounded in a firefight in Tapalpa in Jalisco state and died while being flown to the capital, Mexico City.

Four of his gang members were killed at the scene, and the United States gave the army information to help the mission.

News of his death quickly led to chaos in several Mexican states.

Supporters of the cartel blocked roads, set vehicles and buildings on fire and fought with security forces.

Videos shared online showed thick smoke and violence in popular cities such as Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara, where passengers at the airport ran for safety.

Because of the situation, airlines canceled many flights, and schools closed in some areas.

The Mexican president, Claudia Sheinbaum, told people to stay calm and said most places in the country were still safe.

Officials warned that more violence might continue as rival criminals fight for power after the death of the cartel leader.
