Blessed Uchechi Ugochukwu, better known as Uche Nwayiocha, has won the 2026 Nigerian Broadcasters Merit Awards (NBMA) for Best Female Newscaster.

Nwayiocha, who has spent seven years delivering Pidgin news on Wazobia FM Lagos, said the award confirms that her presentation style connects with audiences.

She has a simple approach to the news, ensuring that her delivery is engaging and easy to understand.

To celebrate the win, Nwayiocha said she plans to double down on her work.

“The reward of hard work is more work,” she said.

"This launches me into another realm.

“It launches me to another level of doing more, excellent delivery, more understanding and engaging kind of newscast.”

She recalled her early days on the job, when she had to break away from the more formal and straitjacketed way many newscasters and anchors delivered the news.

“When I started, I heard a lot of ‘change your style, change your days, change that,’” she said, about the feedback she received early in her career.

Over the years, she has focused on breaking down complicated information without losing the facts.

This has endeared her to Wazobia FM management and its audience, helping her build a personal brand online.

More Wins for CWIAK

Nwayiocha’s award is one of seven won by CWIAK, the acronym used by the radio network that operates Cool FM, Wazobia FM, Nigeria Info FM, Arewa FM, and Kids FM, at the seventh NBMA Awards, held at Oriental Hotel in Victoria Island, Lagos, on Saturday.

Wazobia FM celebrated a win for Yaw, who emerged Best Indigenous Language Radio Presenter or Programme in Lagos for his Pidgin broadcasting.

BigMo of Wazobia FM, Abuja, won the Best Radio Programme Presenter award for Northern Nigeria, while Cool FM, Port Harcourt’s Spaceman (Chuks Roberts), was awarded the Best Radio Presenter (Morning Show) prize for the South-South.

Nigeria Info FM’s Kofi Bartels won the Best Radio Presenter (Morning Show) award for Lagos.

Nigeria Info won first place in the Best Online Radio Platform category, followed by Wazobia FM in second place and Cool FM in third.

Nigeria Info’s other win included Best Radio Station Imaging.
