Dauda Lawal, governor of Zamfara State, has called an emergency security meeting following fresh bandit attacks and reports of explosives planted on highways.

The meeting was held Friday at the Government House in Gusau with heads of security agencies and other key officials.

According to a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, the session was prompted by “alarming recent security developments,” including “credible reports of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) being placed along certain highways.”

The statement said the governor met with security chiefs as part of his administration’s resolve “to end the insecurity affecting Zamfara State.”

It added that the meeting showed the “shared commitment and collective responsibility of the state government and heads of security agencies to protect lives and properties.”

Governor Lawal urged security agencies to increase surveillance and cooperation.

He called for “heightened vigilance, strengthened intelligence, and immediate, coordinated countermeasures.”

He also directed them to prevent armed groups from expanding their activities by “staying ahead of them, denying them freedom of action, and decisively neutralising the threat.”

The governor sympathised with families and communities affected by the attacks.

He also commiserated with security personnel who lost their lives or were injured while defending residents, describing them as “brave personnel who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.”

Lawal assured affected communities of his government’s continued support, including “logistical, operational, and institutional backing” to improve security operations.

Zamfara has faced years of attacks by armed groups, often referred to as bandits, who target villages and highways in the region.
