The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced sweeping changes to its competitions, including plans to introduce an African Nations League and expand the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to 28 teams.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe said the reforms are aimed at improving the structure and competitiveness of African football. He noted that the expansion from 24 to 28 teams will create more opportunities for countries across the continent.

“We have to stop this thing of African fixtures not being predictable, consistent and reliable,” Motsepe said, adding that CAF must also “develop football in East Africa.”

The new format is expected to take effect in upcoming editions, with the 2027 AFCON already set to feature 28 teams and be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

Beyond AFCON, CAF also plans to launch an African Nations League in 2029.

The competition will involve all 54 member nations and be played annually, with a 16-team finals tournament held every two years.

Officials say the new tournament will ensure regular competitive matches for national teams, especially as AFCON is expected to move to a four-year cycle after the 2028 edition.

The reforms come at a time when CAF is under pressure to improve scheduling and governance, following recent controversies around major tournaments.

The introduction of a Nations League mirrors similar competitions in Europe, which could boosting revenue and visibility for African football.

CAF, however, are yet to answer questions about implementation, including the exact format and calendar adjustments required to accommodate the expanded AFCON and the new competition.
