Nigeria’s Super Falcons begin their WAFCON 2026 knockout campaign Sunday against Cameroon, knowing victory will take them into the semifinals and secure a direct ticket to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
The quarterfinal at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca is also another chapter in one of Africa’s biggest women’s football rivalries.
Nigeria enter the game after a mixed group campaign.
The defending champions suffered a shock 3-2 defeat to debutants Malawi before recovering with wins over Zambia and Egypt.
Coach Justin Madugu acknowledged the familiarity between Nigeria and Cameroon and said his technical team would study recent footage of the Indomitable Lionesses.
That preparation will be important for a Nigerian side chasing a record-extending 11th WAFCON title but yet to fully convince under Madugu.
Cameroon reached the quarterfinals after finishing top of Group D following a 1-1 draw with debutants Cape Verde.
The Indomitable Lionesses have plenty of experience in this competition and will see Nigeria as an opportunity to announce themselves as genuine title contenders.
For the Falcons, captain Rasheedat Ajibade and the attack must produce another strong performance after Nigeria scored six goals against Egypt.
The stakes go beyond the continental title.
The winner qualifies directly for Brazil 2027 and advances to the semifinals.
The loser will still have a route to the World Cup through the African playoff tournament, but Nigeria will be desperate to avoid that uncertainty.
For the reigning champions, Sunday is therefore about much more than surviving a quarterfinal.
It is the first major test of their title defence.
