Six Years After #EndSARS, Callers Debate Impact of Protests and Police Reforms

Six years after the #EndSARS protests, callers on Nigeria Info FM’s Morning Crossfire with Ifiemi Andrew have shared differing views on the lessons from the protests and the continued fight against police brutality in Nigeria.

One caller alleged that the government backed what he described as “unscrupulous elements” sent to disrupt the protests. He said police brutality and extortion persist, arguing that the government failed to meet the protesters’ demands for better policies and reforms in the police and other security agencies.

Another caller said the #EndSARS protests taught him that protests do not solve problems in Nigeria, insisting that dialogue and negotiation offer a better way forward. He questioned the significant changes the protests had achieved and noted that, beyond their families, few people remember those who lost their lives.

However, a third caller disagreed, arguing that protests remain necessary for progress. He said the issues raised during #EndSARS had not been adequately addressed, particularly the need to reform the police sector. While commending the current Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, for recent changes, he stressed the need for society to work with the police to improve the system.
