Striking primary school teachers in the FCT have vowed not to return to the classrooms until they start receiving their unpaid salaries and entitlements.

The FCT chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Abdullahi Shafas, announced the decision after a crucial meeting of the union's State Wing Executive Council at the Teachers House in Gwagwalada over the weekend.

Shafas stated that there was a unanimous resolution among the union's members that teachers would only resume classes once they receive their outstanding payments.

The resolution was taken despite efforts by the FCT Minister,  Nyesom Wike, to resolve the crisis by withholding 10% of the Internal Generated Revenue of the six area councils for the past six months to enable him to settle the teachers.

The teachers have been on strike since March, demanding the payment of their salary arrears and other entitlements.

Shafas also appreciated the minister's decision to set up a committee to address other pending demands of the teachers.
