The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently intervene in what it calls the worsening collapse of Nigeria’s health sector.

The association warned that it will begin a total and indefinite strike from October 31, 2025, if its long-standing demands remain unaddressed.

In an open letter signed by its president, Dr. Mohammad Usman Suleiman, NARD described the situation in hospitals nationwide as a “national emergency” and a “matter of national security.”

“Our healthcare system, Sir, is on the verge of collapse, a situation that has now assumed the dimensions of a national emergency and a matter of national security,” Dr. Suleiman wrote.

The doctors urged President Tinubu to personally address their 19-point demand, stressing that contrary to government claims, many issues remain unresolved.

“We are doctors, not politicians. We seek not luxuries, but the basic salaries, allowances, and welfare packages that have already been approved and promised by government,” Dr. Suleiman added.

NARD lamented that many of its members are still being owed salaries and arrears, while working in poor and under-resourced conditions.

The appeal follows an extraordinary National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on October 25, where members voted unanimously to proceed with an indefinite strike once the 30-day ultimatum earlier given to the Federal Government expires.

“The NEC has unanimously directed us to declare a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike action. The NOC will carry out this directive to the letter,”
the NARD president said.

The council also outlined strike monitoring guidelines and reaffirmed its “no work, no pay / no pay, no work” stance — a signal that the doctors are prepared for a prolonged industrial action if necessary.
