An adult woman and an eight-month-old baby were killed in a fatal road traffic crash on Ikorodu Road, Lagos, opposite Olabode House, between Anthony and Obanikoro.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said the accident occurred when a red Tata commercial bus travelling from Palmgroove toward Anthony, allegedly at high speed, lost control, broke through the median barrier and collided head-on with a Volkswagen commercial bus heading in the opposite direction.

“The impact was severe and led to the instant death of an adult female passenger, while an eight-month-old infant later died from injuries sustained in the crash,” LASTMA said in a statement.

LASTMA operatives, supported by members of the public, carried out a swift rescue operation, extricating 10 victims, including both drivers, from the wreckage.

Six injured passengers were rescued from the Volkswagen bus, while four others were evacuated from the Tata bus.

The injured were taken to nearby hospitals by the Lagos State Ambulance Service for urgent medical care, while officials of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit recovered and evacuated the bodies of the deceased.

Police from the Ilupeju Division provided security at the scene.

To prevent further accidents, LASTMA cordoned off the area and cleared the damaged vehicles, restoring traffic flow along the busy Ikorodu Road corridor.

Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the bereaved families, especially the mother of the deceased infant, who was injured and is receiving treatment.

“This is a painful loss that reminds us of the devastating consequences of speeding and poor vehicle maintenance,” Bakare-Oki said.

He urged motorists, particularly commercial drivers, to obey speed limits and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on any journey.
