The United Arab Emirates has announced it will exit Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and the OPEC+ alliance, citing a shift toward national economic priorities amid global energy uncertainty.

The decision, reported Tuesday by state media, will take effect Friday.

It comes as geopolitical tensions, including the US-Israel war on Iran, continue to disrupt global oil markets.

In a statement, the UAE said its exit reflects “long-term strategic and economic vision and evolving energy profile,” adding that while it made “significant contributions and sacrifices,” it must now focus on national interests.

Energy Minister Suhail Mohamed al-Mazrouei said the move followed a “careful review” of current and future production policies.

He told Reuters the decision was taken independently and not discussed with other member states, including key producer Saudi Arabia.

Analysts say the departure of the UAE, a longstanding member, could weaken cohesion within OPEC and complicate efforts to maintain a unified production strategy.

The group has historically sought to present a coordinated front despite internal disagreements over quotas and geopolitics.

The exit marks a significant shift in the global energy landscape, as producers recalibrate strategies in response to volatile markets and evolving national priorities.
