Antonio Guterres has condemned Israeli strikes across Lebanon on April 8, which killed and injured hundreds of civilians, including children, and caused damage to civilian infrastructure.

In a statement, Guterres expressed deep concern over the escalating toll on civilians and extended condolences to the Lebanese government and people.

He called for immediate cessation of hostilities, warning that ongoing military activity threatens the recently announced ceasefire between the United States and Iran.

“International law, including international humanitarian law, must be respected at all times. Civilians and civilian objects must be protected,” the statement said.

The Secretary-General stressed that there is no military solution to the conflict and urged all parties to pursue diplomatic channels and fully implement United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, which calls for a lasting peace in the region.
