FIFA President Gianni Infantino has received a major boost in his bid for re-election after securing support from football bodies in Africa and Asia ahead of the 2027 vote.

Both the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) have both pledged to back Infantino if he runs for another term.

CAF said it had “unanimously agreed” to support Infantino when he stands for re-election, signalling strong backing from African football leaders.

The AFC also confirmed its support.

Its president, Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, said, “FIFA is in its best position ever, and we offer our continued and full support to Infantino as a candidate for FIFA President for the term 2027–2031.”

Together, Africa and Asia control 101 of the 211 votes in FIFA’s presidential election, giving Infantino a strong advantage.

Infantino has also secured backing from South America’s football body, CONMEBOL, further strengthening his position ahead of the election.

The Swiss-Italian official first became FIFA president in 2016 following the exit of Sepp Blatter and was re-elected in 2019 and 2023.

Although FIFA rules limit presidents to three terms, Infantino is allowed to run again because his first period in office was considered partial.

His leadership has brought both praise and criticism, including for expanding the World Cup and introducing new competitions.

The 2027 election is expected to take place at the FIFA Congress, where member nations will vote on the next president.
