Nigeria’s Federal Executive Council has approved major infrastructure projects, including the demolition and reconstruction of Carter Bridge in Lagos at ₦549 billion.

President Bola Tinubu chaired the meeting in Abuja, where the decisions were taken.

Minister of Works Dave Umahi said the bridge would be rebuilt because of its poor condition.

“The Carter Bridge has deteriorated beyond repair,” Umahi said, explaining that the project would involve a full reconstruction rather than repairs.

He added that the contract has been awarded to China Communications Construction Company.

The council also approved ₦24.89 billion for underwater repair works on the Third Mainland Bridge, another key route in Lagos.

In addition, the government approved rail projects worth $2.99 billion across three states.

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, said the projects aim to improve transport and support economic growth.

“These projects include the Lagos Green Line Rail Phase One, the Kano Metro Rail, and the Kaduna Light Rail,” Oyedele said.

He noted that the rail developments are part of efforts to expand Nigeria’s transport network and reduce pressure on roads.

The approvals come as the government pushes for large-scale infrastructure investment to boost the economy and improve connectivity.

Officials say the projects will create jobs and support movement of people and goods across major cities.

Work on the projects is expected to begin after final documentation and funding arrangements are completed.
