The 2026 FIFA World Cup Group I clash between France and Iraq was disrupted by a severe thunderstorm and lightning activity, forcing officials to suspend play for nearly two hours at half-time.

France were leading 1-0 at the break, with Kylian Mbappe scoring in the 14th minute before worsening weather conditions brought proceedings to a halt.

Players from both teams were immediately escorted off the pitch as FIFA activated its lightning safety protocol, which requires an immediate suspension if lightning is detected within an eight-mile radius of the stadium.

Under FIFA regulations, play cannot resume until there is a continuous 30-minute period without lightning activity, with any fresh strike resetting the countdown. In this case, persistent storms extended the delay to almost two hours.

Stadium staff and match officials monitored conditions throughout the suspension as heavy rain, lightning, and strong winds affected the Philadelphia venue. Fans were also evacuated from exposed seating areas for safety.

When conditions finally improved, players completed a full rewarm-up before the match resumed in difficult pitch conditions.

France maintained control after the restart and went on to secure a 3-0 victory, with Mbappe completing a brace and Ousmane Dembele adding a third goal to seal the win.

The match is now recorded as the first major weather-related disruption of the tournament, highlighting the impact of North America’s summer storm conditions on scheduling.

Similar delays have been seen in previous competitions hosted in the United States, where strict lightning protocols have previously caused matches to stretch well beyond their scheduled duration.
