Data Protection Commission Fines MultiChoice N766 Million for Privacy Violations

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has fined MultiChoice Nigeria N766,242,500 for breaching the Nigeria Data Protection Act.

The company was found guilty of violating subscribers’ privacy rights and unlawfully transferring citizens’ data abroad.

Following an investigation initiated in 2024, the NDPC said it uncovered unauthorized data processing and deemed MultiChoice's response to remedial directives unsatisfactory, leading to the fine.

In addition to the fine, NDPC's National Commissioner, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, has ordered a thorough investigation into all MultiChoice data collection outlets nationwide.

The action against MultiChoice adds to its regulatory challenges, as the company also faces criminal charges from the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission for defying directives and impeding investigations.
