Earth Day: HOMEF Urges Faster Shift to Clean Energy

The Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF) has called for accelerated action on clean energy, ecosystem protection and environmental restoration to mark World Earth Day 2026.

In a statement on Wednesday, HOMEF Communications Lead Kome Odhomor quoted Executive Director Nnimmo Bassey as saying the theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” demands urgent efforts to cut emissions and phase out fossil fuels.

“Humanity must rethink its relationship with nature. We must shift from colonial extraction to stewardship,” Bassey said.

He warned that worsening climate impacts, including erratic weather and biodiversity loss, require “transformative responses, not gradual change.”

Bassey said environmental degradation threatens public health and food security, adding that inaction is akin to “burning our father’s house only to inherit the ashes.”

He highlighted persistent oil-related pollution in Nigeria, describing it as an urgent ecological and public safety risk.

Bassey urged authorities to decommission hazardous sites, restore affected environments and support impacted communities.

He also called on citizens to mark Earth Day with practical steps such as tree planting, reducing single-use plastics and adopting zero-waste habits.

“Earth Day must go beyond symbolism to sustained action that secures a livable future,” he said.
