Tributes have continued to pour in from colleagues in Nollywood following the death of veteran actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, at the age of 66.
Veteran actor Jide Kosoko announced that Ogogo’s remains had been taken to his hometown, Ilaro, Ogun State, ahead of his laying-in-state ceremony on Monday at 11am at the Pavillon in Ilaro.
Colleagues across the Yoruba film industry have described Ogogo as a legend whose contributions to the industry spanned more than four decades.
Popular actor Odunlade Adekola, in a post on his Instagram page, wrote, “He was a great star till his last day. Good night. Great legend.”
Femi Adebayo, also writing on Instagram, described Ogogo as “a true pillar of Yoruba cinema,” thanking him for the years, stories, lessons and memorable moments he created through his work.
Saidi Balogun, in an Instagram post, mourned his colleague, writing, “You can rest now my brother Taiwo Hassan Ogogo. May Almighty Allah guide you through Aljannah. This is truly painful.”
Bolanle Ninalowo also paid tribute on Instagram, saying he was fortunate to have met and shared the screen with Ogogo, whom he described as a legend.
Ogogo’s death came only days after his daughters, Kira and Lima Taiwo, appealed for urgent medical assistance after revealing that their father was battling stage-four cancer.
The appeal drew support from several members of the Yoruba film community, with Jide Kosoko disclosing that hundreds of people had offered medical, spiritual and other forms of assistance.
Ogogo began his acting career in the travelling theatre tradition before becoming one of the most recognisable faces in Yoruba-language cinema.
His career spanned more than four decades, with more than 300 film appearances, including OwoBlow, Delicate Cane, Tears of Joy, Idajo Olorun and Queen Lateefat.
His colleagues have continued to remember him not only for his performances but also for his influence on generations of actors and his contribution to the growth of Yoruba cinema.
