SDP, Accord, AAC Presidential Candidates Form Alliance Ahead of 2027

Presidential candidates of the Accord Party, African Action Congress (AAC) and Social Democratic Party (SDP) have agreed to form an alliance ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The candidates — Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim of Accord, Omoyele Sowore of AAC and Adewole Adebayo of SDP — reached the agreement during a meeting in Port Harcourt, where they discussed Nigeria’s democracy, economy and security.

The parties said the proposed alliance is aimed at building a credible democratic alternative and is not merely an anti-incumbency arrangement.

They said it would focus on democratic accountability, economic justice, security, institutional reforms, social inclusion and national development.

The candidates also agreed to continue consultations with other presidential candidates, political parties, organised labour, civil society groups, professional bodies, youth and women organisations, as well as traditional and religious institutions.

They expressed concern over what they described as the concentration of political power, weakening of democratic institutions and shrinking space for political competition, warning that Nigeria could move from a competitive multi-party democracy to what they called “a coronation disguised as an election.”

The proposed alliance is expected to mobilise workers, youths, women, professionals, entrepreneurs and civil society groups across ethnic, religious and regional divides.

The structure of the alliance, its operational modalities and the choice of a joint presidential candidate will be determined after further consultations.

The three candidates also called for an end to what they described as the legal and political persecution of Sowore over his political activities and urged the international community and human rights organisations to monitor Nigeria’s democratic development.

They maintained that Nigeria’s multi-party democracy must be preserved, insisting that no individual, political party, security agency, electoral official or institution is above the Constitution.

The Movement for Democratic Renewal (MDR) was later launched for the South-South and South-East zones, with speakers calling for greater political unity to “rescue” the country.
