Senate President Godswill Akpabio says rising insecurity in Nigeria may be linked to political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections, alleging that some actors are sponsoring unrest to distract the government.
Akpabio made the remarks on Tuesday during the commissioning of the Nigeria Revenue Service headquarters in Abuja.
“You are seeing insecurity today; it’s even increasing because the election is coming.
As soon as the election is over, watch out for the first two weeks; you won’t hear any bomb blasts because people are sponsoring to distract,” he said.
He praised President Bola Tinubu’s administration, saying the president remains focused on reforms despite political pressures.
“They say this man is too good in many areas… Initially, it’s less than 18 governors. Today, we have almost 32 governors under his fold out of 36 states,” Akpabio said.
Nigeria heads into the 2027 election cycle in less than a year, with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) holding a dominant position in several state governments and the National Assembly.
Akpabio also dismissed opposition concerns over alleged moves toward a one-party state, arguing that political parties lack internal stability and structure.
“So where do we belong? How do you win elections when you don’t have structure?” he said.
He further criticized calls for the resignation of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) leadership over alleged partisan social media content, saying the focus should remain on national unity and electoral preparation.
“Anybody can support whoever he wishes to, but when you are in a seat, you have to think of the entire country and its populace,” he added.
The Senate President Akpabio equally said: "Tinubu Is Being Blamed for Every Pregnancy in Nigeria and also Insecurity Will Stop After Elections."
