Andreeva Wins French Open Title as Chwalinska’s Fairytale Run Ends

Mirra Andreeva has won the 2026 French Open, defeating Poland’s Maja Chwalinska in straight sets to claim her first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros.

The 19-year-old Russian secured a 6-3, 6-2 victory in the final, capping off an impressive run in Paris.

Andreeva, seeded eighth, dropped just a handful of sets throughout the tournament as she defeated Fiona Ferro, Marina Bassols Ribera, Marie Bouzkova, Jil Teichmann, Sorana Cirstea, and Marta Kostyuk on her way to the title.

Her semi-final performance was particularly dominant, as she beat Kostyuk 6-1, 6-3 to reach her first Grand Slam final, ending the Ukrainian’s 17-match winning streak on clay.

The victory makes Andreeva the youngest French Open champion since 1992 and confirms her arrival as one of the leading figures in women’s tennis.

For Chwalinska, the defeat brings an end to one of the most remarkable runs in recent Grand Slam history.

The Polish qualifier, ranked outside the top 100 at the start of the tournament, progressed through three qualifying rounds before defeating a series of higher-ranked opponents to reach her first Grand Slam final.

Her run included a semi-final victory over Diana Shnaider, who had earlier stunned world number one Aryna Sabalenka, further highlighting the unpredictable nature of this year’s tournament.

Chwalinska’s journey made her one of the lowest-ranked finalists in the history of the tournament, earning widespread recognition despite falling short in the final.

The 2026 French Open will be remembered for its upsets and breakthrough performances, with both finalists reaching their first Grand Slam final and a new champion emerging in the women’s game.
