Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has cautioned Nigerians against ethnic and religious profiling in the fight against insecurity, saying criminality has no ethnicity and terrorism has no religion.
Disu spoke Wednesday at the North-West Security Summit in Gusau, Zamfara State, where he called for an intelligence-led, community-supported and coordinated regional response to insecurity.
The summit, hosted by the Zamfara State Government, brought together governors, traditional rulers, security chiefs, security experts, development partners, civil society representatives and other stakeholders to discuss banditry, kidnapping, arms proliferation, communal conflicts, farmer-herder tensions and other security threats confronting the region.
Disu urged security agencies and other stakeholders to focus on identifying, isolating and prosecuting criminal networks, their sponsors, arms suppliers, informants and facilitators, regardless of their ethnic or religious backgrounds.
He said no security agency, government or institution could secure the North-West alone, stressing the need for stronger intelligence sharing, inter-state cooperation and coordinated security operations.
The IGP also called for improved border security, greater community engagement and effective early-warning mechanisms to help prevent and respond to emerging threats.
He said a collective approach involving security agencies, state governments, traditional institutions and communities was necessary to address the region's security challenges effectively.
