France head coach Didier Deschamps has backed Kylian Mbappé to become the highest goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history after the striker equalled Miroslav Klose’s record of 16 goals in France’s 3–0 win over Iraq.
Mbappé scored twice in the match, taking his overall World Cup tally to 16 and moving level with Klose on the all-time list. He now sits just behind Lionel Messi, who leads the chart with 18 goals.
Deschamps said records are meant to be broken and expressed confidence that Mbappé has both the consistency and longevity to surpass Messi’s tally and set a new benchmark in the competition.
He also praised Ousmane Dembélé after he opened his tournament account, describing him as a key attacking option as France continue their campaign.
The match was briefly disrupted by a long weather delay, but France maintained control to secure a comfortable victory and strengthen their progress in the tournament.
