Man Dies, Wife Critical as Granite Truck Crushes Car in Lekki

A man has died and his wife is in critical condition after a granite laden truck toppled onto their car on the Lekki Ajah Expressway.

LASTMA says the crash happened Thursday morning at Eleko Junction.

According to the agency, the truck, coming from the Epe axis, reportedly suffered brake failure, lost control, and collided with the couple’s Toyota saloon car. The impact caused the truck to topple, crushing the smaller vehicle.

Officials from LASTMA and the FRSC, assisted by bystanders, extricated the couple. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, while his wife was rushed to hospital for urgent medical attention.

The truck driver reportedly fled the scene.

LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare Oki described the incident as a preventable tragedy and expressed condolences to the family. He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to enforcing traffic laws.

In a separate incident, LASTMA reported that a 33,000 litre fuel tanker caught fire around midnight near Ile Zik on the Lagos Abeokuta Expressway. The blaze was contained by LASTMA and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, with traffic temporarily diverted to the BRT corridor before the road was reopened.
