NIDCOM Urges South Africa to Protect Nigerians Amid Xenophobic Attacks

There’s growing concern over the safety of Nigerians abroad.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission is calling on South Africa to act fast and protect Nigerians and other black immigrants.

Chairperson Abike Dabiri Erewa says the situation is becoming worrying, with reports of renewed xenophobic attacks in some areas.

According to the commission, many Nigerian families are now living in fear.

Children are reportedly scared to go to school, while some business owners are avoiding opening their shops over fears of looting and harassment.

NIDCOM says incidents of violence and intimidation have been recorded despite earlier diplomatic talks.

The commission is urging South African authorities to step up security, prosecute those responsible, and publicly condemn xenophobia.

It also rejected the profiling of Nigerians, stressing that crime should be treated as individual actions, not tied to nationality.

Nigerians living in South Africa are being advised to stay cautious, avoid risky areas, and remain law abiding.

NIDCOM says it is already in touch with Nigerian missions and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nigeria as the situation unfolds.
