The Federal Government has commissioned an Automotive Training Centre in Gusau, Zamfara State, and trained 100 youths in mechatronics to repair petrol- and CNG-powered tricycles and motorcycles.
The facility was inaugurated on Thursday by the Minister of State for Industry, John Owan Enoh, under a collaboration between the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) and the Zamfara State office of the Made in Nigeria Special Project.
According to a statement issued by the Zamfara Governor's spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, the initiative is part of a nationwide programme that has established Automotive Training Centres across the country's six geopolitical zones to expand access to technical skills and automotive services.
Speaking at the event, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal said developments in mechatronics, electric mobility, alternative fuel technologies, smart diagnostics and digital systems are reshaping the global transportation industry.
Lawal said the training centre reflects the state's commitment to equipping young people with practical, industry-relevant skills that can improve employment opportunities and drive economic growth.
The governor noted that shortly after assuming office in 2023, he sought a partnership with NADDC to provide automotive skills training for youths, describing the initiative as a key strategy for tackling poverty, unemployment and insecurity.
He added that the project aligns with President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda and supports the Presidential CNG Initiative aimed at promoting cleaner energy and industrial development.
Also speaking, Minister of State for Industry John Owan Enoh said the Federal Government is intensifying engagements with international investors and leading automotive manufacturers to establish automotive industrial hubs and expand local vehicle production across Nigeria.
The event was attended by the Chairman of the NADDC Governing Board, Chief Emma Eneukwu, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NADDC, Otunba Oluwemimo Joseph Osanipin, as well as representatives of development partners and the private sector.
