Nigerian Army Intercepts Truck Loaded With Illicit Drugs on Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road

Troops of the 65 Battalion of the Nigerian Army have intercepted a truck carrying a large consignment of suspected illicit drugs along the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road, arresting the driver during an intelligence-led operation.

The operation was carried out on July 9 after troops acted on credible intelligence, the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army said in a statement issued Sunday.

Military authorities said preliminary investigations indicated that the suspected drugs were being transported to the Berger area of Lagos State.

The driver, however, was unable to provide satisfactory information about the ownership of the consignment or its intended recipient.

The suspect and the recovered drugs were later handed over to the Lagos State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and possible prosecution.

The handover was conducted by the Commanding Officer of the 65 Battalion, Lt. Col. S. Adeojo.

Reacting to the operation, the General Officer Commanding 81 Division, Maj. Gen. Adebayo Babalola, praised the troops for what he described as their vigilance and professionalism.

"The troops have demonstrated vigilance, professionalism and operational effectiveness," Babalola said, urging personnel to sustain the momentum and intensify efforts to deny drug traffickers and other criminal elements freedom of action within the division's area of responsibility.

The interception is part of ongoing military efforts to disrupt criminal networks and strengthen security operations across the 81 Division's area of responsibility.
