Okada Ban: 259 Motorcycles Impounded in 48 Hours

More than 259 motorcycles have been impounded in the first two days of the Lagos State government’s ban on motorcycle taxis (okada) in six local government areas.

18 drivers have also been arrested in the same period.

The Chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce, Shola Jejeloye disclosed the numbers at the end of his team’s enforcement Thursday evening.

An undisclosed number of passengers were also apprehended in the two days.

Jejeloye said the state government will be prosecuting the arrested passengers and drivers at the Lagos mobile court for violating the state’s traffic laws.

In the meantime, the government will be crushing no fewer than 2,228 impounded motorcycles on Friday.

The motorcycles were seized by the Taskforce and other enforcement agencies in the last few weeks.

Lagos began a fresh crackdown on okadas after the video of some drivers lynching a young sound engineer went viral.

A ban on okadas in six local government areas began on Wednesday, 1 June.

Okadas are also prohibited from operating on all highways, major roads, and bridges in Lagos.
