Oyo Teachers to Begin Indefinite Strike

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has directed public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State to begin an indefinite strike over the continued captivity of abducted teachers and pupils in the state.

In a statement jointly signed by Oyo State NUT Chairman, Hassan Fatai, and Secretary, Salami Olukayode, the union said the decision was necessitated by uncertainty surrounding the rescue and safe release of the victims.

According to the union, the prolonged detention of the abducted teachers and pupils has created fear and anxiety among its members and discouraged parents from sending their children to school.

The NUT said the situation has heightened tension in affected communities and raised concerns about the safety of teachers and learners.

The union directed all public primary and secondary school teachers in the state to withdraw their services from June 1 until further notice, saying the action was intended to draw the attention of relevant authorities to the urgent need to secure the release of the abductees.

It also urged members to comply fully with the directive, remain law-abiding and stay safe during the period.

The union reaffirmed its solidarity with the abducted teachers, pupils and their families, assuring them of its continued support while engagements with government authorities continue.

The directive comes as President Bola Tinubu ordered the deployment of a special rescue team to facilitate the safe rescue of the victims. This version sticks to what is confirmed and avoids implying the strike has already taken effect.
