Reps Order INEC to Pay Outstanding Insurance Benefits for Injured Corps Members

The House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately pay all outstanding insurance benefits owed to NYSC members injured or killed while serving as ad hoc staff during elections.

The directive followed a disclosure by the NYSC Director General’s representative, Omotade Folorunsho, who revealed that corps members harmed during the 2023 general elections have yet to receive their insurance claims.

He said two corps members were shot in Ukwani, Delta State, and one in Akwa Ibom, leaving all three permanently disabled, with no compensation paid to date.

Folorunsho also recalled the killing of 10 corps members during the 2011 elections and described the persistent lack of welfare and security for corps members, who often work with poor pay and inadequate support.

According to him, many receive just ₦4,000 for training and ₦13,500 for election duty, while struggling with shortages of accommodation, water, and basic amenities.

Committee Chairman Hon. Adebayo Balogun praised corps members for safeguarding electoral integrity and pledged reforms to strengthen their safety, compensation, insurance, and overall welfare.
