Lagos State Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Wednesday commissioned a mid-level agro-produce hub in Agege, saying the facility will help reduce food prices, cut post-harvest losses and create jobs.
The 7,000-square-metre Lagos Fresh Food Hub at Pen Cinema is the third mid-level agro-produce hub established by the state, following facilities in Mushin and Abijo, Ajah.
Sanwo-Olu said the hubs are designed to shorten the farm-to-table supply chain by reducing the role of middlemen, improving produce handling and lowering distribution costs.
He said the Mushin hub had recorded more than ₦4 billion in transactions across 228 market days since its commissioning in December 2023, with more than 850 registered vendors and over 7,000 direct and indirect jobs created.
The governor said the Agege facility would serve residents and businesses in the area while strengthening food distribution across Lagos.
Sanwo-Olu also announced that work on the Lagos Central Food Systems and Logistics Hub at Ketu-Ereyun, Epe, is at an advanced stage and will be completed before the end of his administration.
He said the flagship facility, which will include cold and dry storage, processing centres, warehouses, logistics bays and digital trading platforms, is designed to handle more than 1.5 million metric tonnes of food annually and service over 1,500 food trucks daily.
Sanwo-Olu said the state’s investment in food infrastructure is aimed at improving food security, supporting farmers and traders, reducing waste and strengthening Lagos’ food supply system.
