SLIDE SHOW: The Weekend in Pictures

It was a dark weekend for residents of Owo, a town in Ondo State, where dozens of worshippers were killed at a church.

They went to worship, but no fewer than 36 of them did not make out of the St. Francis Catholic Church alive.

They were killed by gunmen who came to the church during Sunday service and opened fire unprovoked.

The incident has drawn criticism from Nigeria and abroad.

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu described it as "the most tragic event!", The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) called it "unacceptable and satanic" and is asking for justice, and President Muhammadu Buhari said eternal sorrow awaits the perpetrators.

Another tragic event happened in Abuja on Saturday.

A member of a vigilante group was set on fire in Lugbe by a mob which accused him of blasphemy against Allah.

Over the weekend, President Muhammadu Buhari held a series of meetings aimed at ensuring the All Progressives Congress' (APC) Special National Convention for Presidential Primary runs smoothly.

He met with with APC presidential aspirants on Saturday and held another meeting with the party's national leaders and some governors on Sunday. Both meetings came after an earlier one with APC Governors.

And over the weekend, tennis star, Rafael Nadal showed why he's "King of Clay" by winning his 14th French Open title.
