U.S. Freezes Assets of Eight Nigerians Over Terror, Cybercrime Allegations

The United States Department of the Treasury has imposed sanctions on eight Nigerians over alleged links to terrorism financing and cybercrime, freezing any assets they may have under U.S. jurisdiction.

The action, announced by the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), blocks all property and interests in property belonging to the individuals within the United States or in the possession of U.S. persons.

U.S. citizens and businesses are also prohibited from conducting transactions with them.

Those named in the designation include Salih Yusuf Adamu, also known as Salihu Yusuf, who U.S. authorities say helped raise and move funds for the extremist group Boko Haram.

He was previously convicted in the United Arab Emirates for attempting to transfer nearly $800,000 to support insurgent activities.

Babestan Oluwole Ademulero was listed for alleged terrorism-related activities carried out under multiple aliases.

Abu Abdullah ibn Umar Al-Barnawi and Abu Musab Al-Barnawi, also known as Habib Yusuf, were sanctioned over alleged leadership and operational roles connected to Boko Haram factions.

Khaled, also known as Khalid Al-Barnawi, was cited for alleged involvement in terrorist coordination and support activities linked to insurgent networks.

Ibrahim Ali Alhassan was designated for suspected ties to extremist elements operating across borders.

Abu Bakr ibn Muhammad ibn Ali Al-Mainuki was accused of maintaining links with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), while Nnamdi Orson Benson was sanctioned under cyber-related authorities for alleged involvement in significant cyber-enabled criminal activities.

U.S. officials said the measures are part of broader efforts to dismantle financial pipelines that sustain terrorism and disrupt global cybercrime operations.

Although the sanctions do not constitute criminal convictions, they are based on intelligence findings and investigative assessments aimed at cutting off access to the international financial system for designated individuals.
