Okpebholo Orders Release of Arrested AAU Students After Ekpoma Unrest

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has ordered the release of students of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, who were arrested following recent violent protests in the town.

The directive came days after dozens of people, including students, were taken into custody in connection with riots that led to the destruction of public and private property in Ekpoma, home to the state-owned university.

State officials said the governor instructed the Ministry of Education and relevant security agencies to immediately verify and secure the release of bona fide students who were arrested during the crackdown.

Those found to be genuine students are expected to regain their freedom once screening is completed.

“The governor has directed that any student wrongly arrested should be released without delay,” a government official said. “The aim is to ensure innocent students are not punished for crimes they did not commit.”

At least 52 suspects were earlier remanded in a correctional facility by a magistrate court, pending further investigation into the violence.

Authorities, however, insist that not all those arrested were students, describing many of them as hoodlums who allegedly took advantage of the protests to loot and vandalise property.

Governor Okpebholo had earlier described the violence as “coordinated and criminal,” alleging that it was sponsored by interests outside the state.

He stressed that while peaceful protest is allowed, criminal acts would not be tolerated.

The announcement of the students’ release has been welcomed by parents, student leaders and rights advocates, who had raised concerns about the arrests.

Security agencies say investigations into the Ekpoma unrest are ongoing, and those found responsible for acts of violence will be prosecuted according to the law.

The Edo State government urged residents to remain calm, assuring the public that peace and normal activities would be fully restored in Ekpoma.
