The Edo State Police Command has rescued nine kidnapped victims, including five passengers abducted from a GUO Transport bus along the Benin–Lagos Expressway, officials said Saturday.
Police spokesperson Eno Ikoedem said the victims were freed during coordinated operations, with four others rescued from captivity in the Imiegba forest in Agenebode, Edo North.
“The Edo State Police Command is pleased to inform the general public that all five victims abducted during the recent kidnapping incident have been successfully rescued alive,” the statement said.
The command added that the breakthrough followed “immediate and massive deployment of tactical teams, intelligence assets, aerial surveillance, and other operational resources” ordered by Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika.
It said sustained pressure on the kidnappers through bush-combing operations and strategic dominance of the area led to the victims’ release and safe recovery.
“They have since received medical evaluation and treatment, and reunited with their families,” the police said, adding that all rescued victims are now safe.
The command also confirmed that security presence along the Benin–Lagos Expressway has been strengthened, with additional tactical and intelligence assets deployed to prevent further attacks.
Authorities said efforts are ongoing to apprehend the perpetrators, stressing that those responsible for the attacks will be tracked down and brought to justice.
