Police Teargas, Disperse Peaceful Makoko Protesters at Lagos Assembly

Police used tear gas and forcibly dispersed a peaceful march to the Lagos State House of Assembly at Alausa on Wednesday, protesters and organisers said.

The march began at the Ikeja under-bridge and was led by people whose homes were recently demolished.

Organisers say officers seized Comrade Hassan Soweto-Taiwo and put him into a police van.

“He’s not picking. We don’t know what’s happening with him,” Zikora Ibeh, Assistant Executive Director of Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA), told our correspondent.

Elderly men and women were also arrested, per her recounting of events.

Protesters had planned to speak with lawmakers about mass demolitions.

They said they were barred from entering the Assembly and that security forces moved in while lawmakers watched.

“All this happened with law enforcement watching,” Ibeh said.

At least one woman was taken to Lagoon Hospital with tear-gas injuries, organisers said, and another man was reported shot and wounded.

Video from the scene showed crowds in chaos and a woman searching for her baby after the dispersal, Ibeh added.

The demonstrators demanded a chance to meet lawmakers and called for an end to forced evictions.

Our correspondent at the scene described the protest as calm before police action.
