The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) have begun a nationwide strike over what they described as unfair treatment and disparity in the payment of withheld salaries by the Federal Government.

The Unions in a memo on Friday by its Joint Action Committee (JAC) of SSANU and NASU, Mohammed Ibrahim, SSANU national president, and Peters Adeyemi, NASU general secretary, said the strike is a response to the government’s failure to effectively address their demands.

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) berated the government over the way it handled the situation by releasing the four months of withheld salaries to ASUU while leaving out non-academic staff.

Recall that on Monday, SSANU and NASU threatened to shut down hostels and power supply in universities across the country if the Federal Government fails to meet its demands before today, March 18, 2024.

The SSANU President had said his members including Vice Chancellors, registrars and bursars have not been paid 2022 arrears.

The memo in part reads:

“Please, note that the 7-day warning strike should be comprehensive and total, as no concession should be given in any guise,” the memo reads in part.

“Your strict compliance and adherence to this directive are mandatory for all NASU and SSANU branches in universities and inter-university centres.”
