Former British Prime Minister, David Cameron, has been named the country's new foreign secretary in a surprise cabinet reshuffle by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

Cameron, who served as prime minister from 2010 to 2016, took the new role on Monday after James Cleverly, who was foreign secretary, replaced Suella Braverman as the home secretary.

Reports suggest Braverman’s sacking was due to her controversial remarks on pro-Palestinian protests and her article in The Times newspaper that met with massive criticism.

In the article, she wrote: "I do not believe that these marches (pro-Palestinian protests) are merely a cry for help for Gaza."

She also accused the Metropolitan Police of "playing favourites" with pro-Palestinian protesters.

Speaking shortly after his appointment, Cameron noted that the country was facing a daunting set of international challenges, including the war in Ukraine and the crisis in the Middle East.

"I hope that my experience – as Conservative leader for 11 years and Prime Minister for six – will assist me in helping the prime minister to meet these vital challenges," he said.
