The Nigerian Correctional Service says 1,271 offenders are currently serving non custodial sentences across the country as part of efforts to reduce overcrowding in correctional centres.

According to the latest statistics, the figure comprises 1,137 males and 134 females serving alternatives to imprisonment.

Community service remains the most common sentence, with 1,038 offenders nationwide, including 992 males and 46 females.

The data also showed that 12 offenders are on parole, while 34 are serving probation sentences.

In addition, 162 offenders are undergoing restorative justice programmes, while 25 others are serving different forms of non custodial sanctions.

Overall, males account for about 89 percent of the non custodial population, while females make up 11 percent.

The Nigerian Correctional Service said the non custodial system, introduced under the Nigerian Correctional Service Act 2019, is designed to reduce congestion in correctional centres, promote rehabilitation and strengthen the criminal justice system.

The service reaffirmed its commitment to expanding the use of community service, probation, parole and restorative justice as alternatives to imprisonment across the country.
